The crazies don’t run the party, but they are powerful enough that anyone who draws their ire will spend all of his or her time trying to keep their position.

Nor can Chris Christie switch parties, since his budget cuts mean that the Democratic base now hates him. He can only be a Republican, which means he has to get along within the party.
