Republicans [are] opposed to the fact that those who wished to purchase guns would have to pay for a background check.

“I now have to pay $25 to have this check,” Rep. Bill Rehm, R-Albuquerque. “To me, this is kind of like that poll tax.”

“That’s why we felt the burden of the cost should be on the state if we’re going to mandate this,” Rehm said.

Rep. Cathrynn Brown, R-Carlsbad, agreed, saying, “I do see this as a poll tax equivalent.”
