I think contempt for both employees and customers is common to many business owners, large and small. Consumers are sheep, they just buy whatever you sell; employees are moochers who don’t contribute anything; business owners are the ones who do everything, who take all the risk, they deserve all the rewards.

There’s probably some truth to that. I think there was a culture shift in the 90s (the age of everyone getting degrees in business administration and MBAs) that built off of cultural touchstones like the movies Wall Street and Boiler Room.

Again, it’s also a personality/experience thing - business owners really do put in insane hours and don’t always see grand returns (I remember as a kid having to listen to the Super Bowl on the radio because my parents were working that Sunday in the office)
