re: #242 lostlakehiker

Nonsense. Total nonsense.

We already took a bigger hit than the loss of a president would be. Having lived through both the JFK assassination, and 9-11, I just remember the two shocks. 9-11 was the bigger.

Conservatives didn’t just “start shooting”. Some loon, one out of 300 million, went off and murdered a Sikh because of the turban, thinking that turban spells Muslims spells al Qaida or something. And he’s been convicted, and he might even be genuinely sorry.

The national guard would not fall apart. Training and discipline are good in that branch of the armed forces, at least by comparison to its historical record.

All too many presidents have been assassinated. Others have been shot but survived. In no case did the nation fall apart as a result. Whenever the next one happens, and may it be centuries away, we won’t fall apart then either.

An Obama assassination would not be like the JFK assassination. It would be more like the MLK assassination. Do you remember the riots following that? 9-11-01 was a different kind of hit, because it came from outside and killed indiscriminately. An Obama assassination would be taken more personally, like that of Dr. King.

I don’t think the country would fall apart, but I do think there would be violence in the cities.
