yah, being a beatnik was definitely more exclusive and cooler than being a hippie. and there were other cultural distinctions:

beatnik - listens to modern jazz and likes abstract expressionist art
hippie - listens to “rock” (not “rock ‘n’ roll”) and likes art nouveau posters and tibetan mandalas
