Ambassadors use to have real jobs when it took a few weeks for messages to go back and forth. Now ambassadorships are usually handed out to big campaign donors (Huntsman being one of the exceptions).

To the 100 or so countries we don’t give a shit about, sure. But you can bet the ambassadors to Security Council nations have serious diplomatic chops. And our Ambassador to Syria has balls of steel. We can also assume that Joe Wilson (Mr Valerie Plame) didn’t get his job in Iraq (appointed by GHWB) and Nigeria, and awards for doing it so well, due to campaign support.
