She’s rightfully upset. I’m no Marxist but too much of modern society is all about profits first and what we can do for the planet second.

There was a shift, that started in the 1980s and accelerated in the 1990s when everyone started getting degrees in Business Administration, that the correct form of corporate governance went from a stakeholder view to shareholder primacy.

Under the stakeholder model the CEO and board of directors considered the views and potential benefits of action for all stakeholders (meaning customers, employees (both labor and management), shareholders, and even the local community). But under the shareholder primacy model, the only thing that matters is ROI for shareholders and usually in the immediate quarterly reports. There’s no consideration of long term goals or health of the business beyond the next dividend payment and what the stock price is.
