I’m sure this has nothing to do with Google’s inability to gain dominance over Baidu in China and the company simply trying to score some martyr cookies on their way out of a market they probably were considering exiting before the gmail hacking issue.

not sure about that. Even 10% of the Chinese market is enough to make any businessman worth his salt get a little excited.

Google is going to lose a LOT of money by doing this (if the Chinese shut them out), and they are still doing it anyway.
