I haven’t really followed the Trump and Frederick Douglas issue in detail.

Given Trump knew nothing about him, why did he bring up his name? And why didn’t he read a speech prepared by someone who actually knows something about African American history?

Trump basically ad-libbed that speech. He had a few terse notes and tried to riff off those. He can’t do it. His lack of knowledge hampers his ability to speak intelligently off the cuff. I’ve taught public speaking, and I could tell he ran out of things to say about Black History Month halfway through the talk.
