I noted the concerns that were voiced when Benedict ascended to the Papacy. This event does not bode well in light of those concerns. I am a lapsed Catholic myself, and I imagine that the rest of my family is not going to like this one bit.

I may well be wrong, but I THINK that Benedict is trying to restore this person to the faith. Allowing him to receive the sacraments is the first step of that process. Dear Oscar Wilde notwithstanding, stupidity is not a sin AS LONG AS it does not interfere with faith. That’s where Mr. Williamson has to get straightened out, or he will be subject to be excommunicated again.

This reinstatement does NOT mean that the Pope or anyone with the sense God gave a goat agrees this this person.
