It should be treated as a crime scene and proceed as potential crime regardless. No discretion should be allowed to the on-scene police officer. It must always lead to an “official inquest.”

If the law’s not simply repealed, then it should be revised on the same lines as current procedure when dealing with cops that kill in the line of duty. Relieve them of any firearms, have their statement videotaped, then confine them to the city limits while a full investigation is done. If anything that is found to suspect a crime has been committed, impanel a grand jury and present the evidence. If nothing comes of it, return their firearms and close the case.

And, for the love of God, make it clear in the revised law that cops are not street judges who are allowed to decide for themselves if a suspect is lying or not.
