The thing is, Frank, that all self-defense law is ultimately linked to the idea of what a “reasonable person” would believe. As I’ve previously mentioned, I read in the last 16 months (I forget exactly when) about a would-be burglar who was carrying a device to open locks that looked like a gun at a distance. An armed homeowner shot him dead. The homeowner was not even arrested, much less charged with any crime. He was exonerated because he’d come across a man unlawfully in his house whom he reasonably believed was armed with a pistol. That the criminal was in fact unarmed was irrelevant.

But what if his decision was WRONG on all points? Trayvon was walking the standard path back to his home. He was not in anyone’s house. How do you not differentiate this case, this specific case?
