My own experience is that a LOT of Conservatives think that Liberals are bad people. Just sayin’. And I think you’re correct that it’s a fringe phenomenon. People closer to the center see how their own ideas move left and right over time, and find points of agreement with people on the ‘other side’.

Also, rational people on any side can separate persons from politics, and acknowledge that even if you think someone’s ideology is bad, that doesn’t have to mean they are bad people or have bad intentions. On the fringe left people will believe that Republicans hate poor people, and on the fringe right they’ll believe that liberals hate america and want to destroy it.

There certainly are bad people in the world, but many people fail to give the benefit of the doubt to their political opposition and acknowledge that they do on the whole have good intentions— they just have a different vision.
(I’m talking about normal ideologies here, not the evil ones which are clearly based on hate and advocate destruction: like fascists, white supremacists, Nazis, etc)
