We technically didn’t invade Afghanistan during the Soviet war, but we still backed “our people” against their “regime.”

The mistake we made in Afghanistan wasn’t in helping to drive out the Soviets, but in refusing to spend even a thousandth as much in redevelopment aid afterwards.
