A British political scientist, Andrew Price-Smith, found evidence in the Austrian state archives that indicates the H1N1 pandemic was already sweeping through Austro-Hungary in early 1917. It was in his 2008 book “Contagion and Chaos”.

The war back then, and our interconnectedness now, makes finding patient zero impossible.
