As a German, let me tell you that I am slightly envious of the people in other countries in which intergenerational communication about WWII is a lot easier than in Germany.

I can sort of imagine. My sister married a German whose father used to beat him often, until he was an adult. He had some mysterious military past. His son committed suicide, leaving my sister a widow at a young age. She stayed in Germany, though.
