My Ukrainian neighbors (exchange teachers) filled me in last weekend on how things are in their hometown of Lugansk. Tanya said bombs were going off around her while she was there this summer. Her parents have moved out of the city to a rural location, but they have no water or electricity. Natalya’s family is also without utilities. Lugansk is a combat zone, they say.

Meanwhile, their employer, University of Lugansk, is no longer in operation. So, they have no jobs waiting for them if they go back. Because their uni is out of commission, our Chinese university is not sure if the faculty exchange can be renewed, and thus, their work visas are in jeopardy. In other words, they can’t work here after June 1, and if they go home, they don’t have jobs.
