Khrushchev just had to give that secret speech didn’t he? You’ll like this since you’re in the CR but I’m reading Dubceks autobiography now. My belief is Khrushchev was more clever than given credit for. Makes sense since he had few admirers when his legacy was being formulated after his ousting. I know Stalin’s reputation has seen a resurgence in Russia. Wouldn’t surprise me if Brezhnev has too.

I’ll have to look for that autobiography of Dubček’s. And yes, Khrushchev may have come across as some kind of country bumpkin, but he was no fool. After all, it takes some smarts to have survived all those years in Stalin’s inner circle - and some simple-minded hayseed fresh off the turnip truck would’ve been shot early on in the Purges.
