The flip side is that when you start prosecuting reporters for leaks, people who reporters rely upon for information (legal or otherwise) aren’t as forthcoming so the amount and quality of reporting is affected; it has a chilling effect.

That reduces the ability of journalists to do their jobs in finding out how government operates (particularly in the national security area) and whether things are operating as they should - among others.
