Come to think of it, since one is a member of the Jewish people, halachically, only if one’s mother was a Jew, it is odd indeed for so many Jews to have voted for Obama on the basis of his race (as many did)—since “halachically” he would be white.

Halachically, he’s a Kansan. Race is irrelevent from a halachic point of view. Also, Obama is irrelevent from an halachic point of view—we only decide our own tribal membership issues. (Am suppressing my great race and Judaism rant here, which takes a long time, and involves dramatic hand gestures.)
