He needs Odessa to break the ” blockade of Transnistria”. Check it out on the map. Odessa is easier to grab and hold. Otherwise Putin needs to take and hold all of Southern Ukraine for a land route. Much easier to grab just Odessa and then he’ll have a port city.

I repeat, why does Putin need any territory outside the existing Russian borders? Russia has plenty of ports already.
