You know, it occurs to me that a lot of people who indulge in the hero worship of vets seem to work from the faulty assumption that *all* vets are combat vets who are always on the front lines protecting us against the filthy, evil hordes that would destroy our freedoms, totally disregarding the fact that support staff who rarely even touch their weapons outside of basic and refresher training outnumber combat troops by a lot.
That’s not to say that support staff isn’t worthy of recognition, because they are every bit as important (and, often, even more so) as combat troops, but I seriously doubt that what I said above factors into the patriotism-by-rote that many in this country practice.
