re: #250 Leonidas Hoplite

I’m all for a lot more nuclear power.

Electric vehicles? Won’t this really help if the electricity is generated by a clean source? Personally I’m waiting for fuel cell cars - that will be cool. In the meantime I’m considering one of the new diesels.

The problem with fuel cells is that hydrogen from water is uneconomical; it takes a lot of energy to produce the hydrogen; far more than you’ll get back.
Most hydrogen available today comes from natural gas, and that process takes energy, so the entire cycle isn’t that efficient.
The car doesn’t produce CO2, but producing hydrogen from natural gas does.
And hydrogen made with solar power is expensive; the economical source would be nuclear power. (Admittedly, the 2003 National Academy of Engineering study is a bit out of date, but I’m unaware of any breakthroughs that change its conclusions)
