No, Mr. Barber, you cannot be convicted of the crime of being Christian. You cannot be convicted if you /think/ other people’s behavior is self-destructive and immoral. The criminal part comes in if you do more than think ill of others.

The first amendment basically says that you cannot force me to worship your god. You cannot have a law which is based solely on your religious beliefs, you cannot deny rights based on your religious beliefs. If you insist on acting or denying in accordance with your beliefs, your action or refusal to act may indeed be a crime.

When people murdered black men for dating white women (and raped and/or beat the crap out of the women in many cases), they comtted crimes despite thinking they were acting to suppress immoral and self-destructive behavior. When people were arrested for throwing fire-bombs into women’s health clinics the arrests were for the assaults and property damage, not for thinking abortion supporters were Satan’s own.

It’s really pretty simple, Mr. Barber. There shall be no law favoring any particular religion. Let what is god’s remain god’s, and render what is caesar’s to caesar. If you can’t tell the difference, perhaps it isn’t god you’re hearing.
