It’s all about nationalism, and securing their place as a regional power. Iran’s most effective foreign policy weapons are IEDS to Iraq/Afghanistan and its support for Hamas/Hezbollah. The “high tech stuff” is mostly domestic. The Iranian military has a pretty good idea of what the US military is capable of, having had ringside seats for three of the last five major US deployments. Whether or not the political and religious leaders believe them is another story.
