There were no large international corporations back then, the very concept of the multinational was alien to them.
And the notion of granting them legal personhood would have been abhorrent.
But there was, the East India Company. A privately owned (by very wealthy men) company that got special treatment from the government to help them keep a monopoly. Had their own army/navy, and pretty much did what the fuck they wanted.
But unlike today, when they got preferential treatment over us colonists the shit hit the fan.
