That is what animates the Tea Partiers. I’ve been to several rallies (NY, NJ, PA) and have seen an overwhelming desire for what I’d refer to as basic libertarianism: less government, less taxes, strong on defense, and keep out of our private lives and bedrooms.

I think you’re projecting a lot here. I haven’t seen much “strong on defense, and keep out of our private lives and bedrooms” in the Tea Parties. Not much “less taxes” either. Even granting that the racism messages in the Tea Parties are due to the proverbial few bad apples, I’ve seen mostly “less spending”, but without specifying what to cut, and “repeal ObamaCare”.
