Umm, start with secure doors, locks, windows and an alarm or alert system. All of which is designed to wake you up in time to act appropriately. Run, gun, fire extinguisher or back to sleep after a false alert. Without those things you may as well sleep in a park. In those rare instances where a gun or a fire extinguisher are what you need, you may want to note that in both cases nothing else will do.

Though in both cases escaping the house and notifying local emergency response is also a very valid option.
