Watching the film, I do keep wondering why Elrond didn’t simply push Isildur over the brink and save everyone thousands of years of inconvenience.

Now that you mention it, let me retcon that like a good geek should. My theory is that Elrond was addicted to Vilya, supposedly the most powerful of the Three Elvish Rings, and was so eager to feed that addiction that he put it back on immediately once the One Ring was cut from Sauron’s hand. Once Isuldur took possession of it Elrond was pwned by its dominance over all rings of power.
