I’m of the opinion that history books will look back on this era in much the same way that we now look back on McCarthyism and the Dixiecrats.

That’s probably the best analogy, at least in recent times. We have the equivalents of loyalty oaths, grandstanding Congress-fools, attacks on the arts, wild allegations against government employees, and a threat that is real enough in many ways, but nothing like what is alleged in either its nature or magnitude.
