That’s pretty true now. At $1800/troy oz, few Americans are buying gold jewelry. Other than engagement rings, gold and platinum are outside of the average American’s experience, and even for wedding rings alternative metals are now common.

One day people will realize that there is nothing one can do with gold except hoard it, or make good reflectors for spacecraft.
