Your clue would be how what I suggest changes the odds / stats you refer to. National stats are great. They teach us how to improve our odds on that individual basis. The lesson does not start and end with statistics. It only starts there. Do things right and the odd change in your favor. Act irresponsibly and they get worse.

My clue about what? I’m not denying there are ways to mitigate the risk of a gun in the house; it’s still mitigation of risk. It’s still a risk, and for those people who have it there to prevent a home invasion, the risk brought by the gun is going to be larger than the risk of home invasion. (With the fun bonus that owning guns may make you a bigger target for burglary in the first place.)

Owning a gun is, in many cases, the irresponsible action in the first place. Even if the person acts responsibly with the gun, keeping a gun in the house against the statistically tiny probability for the vast majority of people of a home invasion is irresponsible.
