Reading through the Wikipedia article, you are correct. People are pushing for states to do this anyway because they’re hoping that, if they cross 2/3, they can get Congress to remove the ratification deadline. They try to point out that the 27th amendment, which was proposed originally by Madison, never had a deadline.
