If you’re commuting to Lower Manhattan, you might have an easier time; PATH is more reliable these days - going into Hoboken rather than dealing with the NEC and NY Penn. There’s also telecommuting, and as companies realize that those tunnels are in dire shape, more may consider that as an option for qualified workers (if they want to retain/hire them).

I couldn’t imagine commuting in the NYC area

It can be awful, or rather easy, depending on where you live, and what mass transit is available. Subways are pretty convenient and mostly reliable. But if you’re away from those subways, the buses can be an option. Parts of Brooklyn can be only a few minutes to Midtown, while others can take an hour or longer. From Staten Island to Midtown Manhattan, it can be an hour or longer on a good day.

The commute to Lower Manhattan from Northern NJ is about an hour, depending on where you are.
