Delaying is usually a good tactic-but pouring gasoline via 18 USC 1001 not only added fuel to the fire but short-circuited being able to delay the process-and in this case, it wound up prematurely exposing the whole sordid affair prematurely.

I think the thing that got him was when he changed the amount of the withdraws from the original amount (which were automatically required to be reported anyway as part of CTR regs) to below the reporting amount (‘smurfing’).
