Also, this has more to do with privilege than race. Gates apparently yelled “You have no idea who you’re dealing with!”, which is exactly the kind of thing a privileged member of the elite yells at a lowly beat cop who makes the mistake of not kowtowing to the person in authority.

If you look closely at the report, you’ll also note that when Gates did finally show an ID to Crowley, it wasn’t his drivers license. It was his Harvard faculty ID.

There’s no reason anyone would do that, other than to emphasize the “you don’t know who you’re messing with” aspect of the whole thing.
