The ER could be nerve-wracking at times but it was an authentic chance to do people some real, immediate good. I worked with a young doctor who happens now, 30 years later, to be my family doctor. Just the other day, he had an intern with him when I went in for something or other. Possibly to show primitive it used to be, he regaled her with a story about how he and I had manhandled an unconscious heart attack victim out of the cab of his friend’s pickup and carried him bodily into the ER. The guy survived.

My favorite ER story is the day I had to take The Princess, then 4, into the in her Royal Blue Princess Dress because she had a bead stuck up her nose. It was shiny gold.

She blew it out before they got to us, but not before she had made everyone’s day.
