Because nothing gets done if you do that, James. In order to succeed in fixing the Garden State’s finances, Christie has to retain leverage and negotiating power with the legislature. If he just does what he thinks he should do and neglects the needs of his coalition, then the Democrats will simply dig in their heels and try to wait him out. He needs to retain his base of support and in politics that often means helping people you don’t like.
