It IS tough, and it gets tougher. My Dad’s most prized attribute was always his memory. He could hide 3 dozen eggs in the house on Easter and remember where every last one was. Now he can’t even remember how old he is, or that it’s his own house he’s living in. It’s like aging robs us of ourselves.

My dad’s mom really lost it at the end. Dad was visiting her at the home and she leaned in and told him she was glad she married him. Made me sad knowing that my late grandfather was the love of her life. They really had the most beautiful love story of any couple that I know of. Met in middle school, he treated her as his equal, and they got to visit their ancestral homes together in retirement.
