They’ve never been able to drive in snow or ice here down south. But the 2 most terrifying words in winter? It’s actually better to stay off the roads, and even the slightest hint of snow delays schools for 2 hrs. Everything shuts down with just an inch of the fluffy stuff.
“Black ice.” Just put a slight coating of snow over icy patches, and it’s bumper car time.
Black ice can be a problem here too, as is freezing rain.
I was going down a slight hill to a set of lights about 100ft away and applied my brakes. I slide all the way into the intersection. My wife had her eyes closed the entire time.
In another vehicle I was driving a 4x4 with mud tires and hit a bit of ice just before a set of lights. The truck spun and the back end just missed a Mercedes waiting at the lights.
I usually drive my way out of trouble without touching my brakes but in those two situations I had no choice.
