How many years of record profits do they have to post before the hiring spree begins? Or are we just supposed to assume that a tepid recovery is the new norm?

I think the new norm is shorting work hours so that nobody gets health care or pensions. As many folks as possible are going to be “part time” all the time.

Funny. The stuff we’re seeing in the US I read about this a dozen years ago in a class on Japanese business practices. Dorine Kondo was the author of the monograph, which was all about how Japanese female workers were discriminated against in ways that kept them form entering management or making enough money to cross fully into entrepreneurial small business.
