For sins against God, one asks forgiveness directly from God, with Yom Kippur being seen as the moment when one is most immediately making atonement and asking for forgiveness.

This is the same for us, except for the Yom Kippur part (but we also have certain times that are special when for forgiveness).

For sins against another person, you must go to them, ask forgiveness, and offer restitution. They, in turn, are required to forgive. (If they don’t, you are required to ask forgiveness the three times, after that you’ve fulfilled your technical obligation.)

This is also the same for us, except for the three times rule (AFAIK).
