Under the law, he was within his rights not only to demand the return of the property, but to kill the thief. Under previous legal standards, he would have needed to use deadly force only as a “last resort.”

There are repercussions to changing the “last resort” standard. This is what they look like - as does the outcome of Zimmerman not getting changed for killing Martin.
