I recall reading an article a few years back by an Australian recounting all the red tape required to get his green card. A dozen different offices, each with its own forms and each not talking to the other offices.

IOW, it’s impossible to game the system unless you have a shit-ton of money to buy one of those “investment visas.”

The US is also strict about Americans marrying foreigners. The couple has to have been together at least six months for the spouse to qualify for either a fiance/fiancee visa or married visa. My friend learned this the hard way four months after he married his Chinese girlfriend.

The rationale is to discourage “hit-and-runs,” where the foreign spouse marries the American solely to get the visa, only to dump the guy/gal at the first opportunity once in the States.
