It’s a practice dating back to when the Mormons were hated and attacked. If you have a secure refuge and a food and water supply, you may be able to stand off the haters attacking you till they run out of supplies and have to leave. Emergency food supplies are actually a good idea, but Beck is not likely the one to take advice from on them.

I usually have a week and a half backup.
For the occasional hurricane/tropical storm that wanders up this way.
That and the unpredictable winters…
