At best, use of an unnamed source should never be more than a stepping stone along the way to verifiable sources of information; the risk of abuse remains high, and argues against their use.

Exactly. I don’t have a problem with unnamed sources as long as the rest of the story backs the claim up with info that can be verified. Unnamed source said X, and we can prove it with Y and Z.

The problem with the NYTimes is they can write entire stories with only unnamed sources that only back each other up. It’s like they are saying “look, we are the NY Times and you should just trust us.”

That’s too bad, because I don’t trust them.
