My opinion is that the improved seeds caused the increase in cotton production. The slave torture was just for lulz.

I read Ed Baptist’s book. His argument wasn’t just about seeds. It was a very densely written argument about how white Southern slave owners monetized slavery. I strongly recommend it, because it’s not just about seeds. Others are proably greatly offended by Baptist’s word choices. He doesn’t call where slaves lived “plantations,” he calls them “slave labor camps.” He really sticks the knife into the legendary old genteel South. And then twists it.

Again, highly recommended.
