In that vein, a particular stupid move was Canada’s management of the tar sands. They awe essentially letting foreign companies (mostly Chinese and American) drain the last major oil source in the world. Canada doesn’t even have a strategic reserve!!

Agreed, but the money simply isn’t present in Canada for this type of project. We’re talking multiple developments costing $10s of billions each. Foreign investment is the only thing making it remotely feasible.
