Because you are making the ultimate sacrifice for other humans. One would think it’s the highest form of altruism.

Why? If I snatch someone from the path of a speeding car and wind up dead, I don’t consider that “martyrdom” but something entirely different and far more important than sacrificing oneself for a cause of any kind.

Do you consider soldiers in the employ of a State army martyrs?
