When people began to rely on their FB feeds for information beyond what their friends and family are up to, and when “Trending on Twitter” became a news item in itself, I began to despair for the future of the Republic.

This is no different than relying on your friends, family, colleagues, or other people in your social circles for information, as had been done for thousands of years.
